...Historically, it appeared in the 17th and 18th centuries in the process of the establishment and development of the slave-labored sugar plantations (engenhos) in northeastern Brazil. In a farm society with the farmer at the top and the slaves at the bottom, the lavradores and moradores made up the main middle class in the agricultural production sector. The lavradores were white colonists (often the sons or brothers of the farmer) who did not have the qualifications or funds to acquire the land for colonization (sesmaría) and build a sugar mill, but instead rented land within the farm and cultivated sugar cane as sharecroppers (sharecroppers). ...
