This coast faces Sagami Bay in the southwest of Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is a flat beach that stretches for about 4 kilometers from Inamuragasaki to Koyurugigasaki in Koshigoe to the west. It is so named because it is about 7 ri (approximately 6 cho = 1 ri). The Enoshima Electric Railway Line and National Route 134 (Shonan Road) pass through it. It is a scenic spot with a panoramic view of Enoshima nearby, Fuji, Hakone, Izu, Oshima, and the Miura Peninsula in the distance. On the beach near Inamuragasaki stands a monument to the Zushi Kaisei Junior High School students (12 boys lost in a gust of wind in 1910) who are known for their mourning song, "The pure white peaks of Mt. Fuji, the green island of Enoshima..." and on top of it stands a bronze statue of the brothers facing the beach. Swimming is prohibited in the sea because of rough waves, but it is popular for surfing. [Yukio Asaka] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
