…After the sudden death of Rosso in 1540, a trend toward academic classicism began to emerge. Under the strong influence of the Fontainebleau School, French artists such as the sculptor Goujon, the portrait painter Clouet, and the architect du Cerceau also began to flourish. Antoine Caron (c. 1520-c. 1600), who worked under Primaticcio, later painted scenes of massacres during the religious wars and festival processions in similarly bright tones. The second Fontainebleau School was led by three painters, Toussaint Dubreuil (1561-1602), Ambroise Dubois (1543-1614), and Martin Fréminet (1567-1619), who also worked on the decoration of the palace. …

...Reformed Mannerists with a strong religious and realistic tendency, such as Jean-Pierre de Bélange (1559-1613), were active in France. In France, J. de Bélange and Antoine Caron (c. 1520-c. 1600) created Mannerist art, and continued to be active until the appearance of Bouet and N. Poussin. In Flanders, Jan, the second son of P. Bruegel the Elder, occupied a position between Mannerism and Baroque with his meticulous realism.
