Wave-like clothing pattern - Honpashikiemon

This is a type of expression for the folds of the clothing of Buddhist statues. It is counted as one of the characteristics of wooden sculptures from the early to mid-Heian period (9th to 10th centuries). The folds of the clothing alternate between large, round-headed ones and small, sharp-edged ones, resembling large and small waves crashing on the shore, giving the single piece of wood a more intense and stern impression. The lines of the folds in the clothing of the standing statue of Eleven-Headed Kannon at Hokke-ji Temple in Nara and the seated Shaka Nyorai statue at Muroji Temple in Nara are typical examples of this style. Also, when small waves are arranged in pairs between large waves, as in the statues in the Kondo Hall of Muroji Temple, this is sometimes called rippled wave-style clothing folds, but there is also a theory that this style of clothing fold is not an advanced version of the wave-style clothing folds, and that its origin and process are completely different.
