Chen Yi

Chinese politician and soldier. Born in Sichuan Province. After graduating from Shanghai Jiaotong University, he traveled to France in 1920, and after returning to China, he founded the New Shu News in Chongqing. In 1923, he joined the Communist Party in Beijing, and was active mainly in Central China from the time of the Kuomintang-Communist cooperation to the time of division. He served as a detachment commander and acting commander of the New Fourth Army, and as commander of the Third Field Army of the People's Liberation Army, which was reorganized after the war, he liberated Shanghai, China's largest city, in 1949 and became its mayor. In 1954, he attended the Asian-African Conference (Bandung Conference), was appointed Vice Premier of the State Council, and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1958 until his death from illness, and energetically visited Asian and African countries accompanied by Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, and others. He was criticized during the Cultural Revolution and demoted to Central Committee member in 1969. He was rehabilitated at the time of his death.

中国の政治家、軍人。四川(しせん)省生まれ。上海(シャンハイ)交通大学卒後、1920年に渡仏、帰国後は重慶(じゅうけい)で『新蜀報』を創刊。1923年北京(ペキン)で共産党に入党、国共合作から分裂期を通じて華中を中心に活躍した。新四軍の支隊司令・代理軍長を務め、戦後に改編された人民解放軍の第三野戦軍司令として、1949年、中国最大都市の上海を解放、上海市長となった。1954年アジア・アフリカ会議（バンドン会議）に出席、国務院副総理に就任、1958年以来病死するまで外交部長の職にあり、周恩来、劉少奇(りゅうしょうき)らに同行してアジア・アフリカ諸国を精力的に訪問。文革で批判され、1969年中央委員に降格。死去の際には名誉回復がなされた。
