The Indian subcontinent is broadly divided into a continental part and an island part. The topography of the continental part is divided into four parts: (1) the Deccan Plateau, (2) the Tertiary folded mountain belt in the north, (3) the Indus-Ganga (Ganges) basin plain between the two, and (4) the coastal plain on both sides of the Indian peninsula. The northern limit of the Deccan Plateau is the line connecting the Aravalli Range, the south of Delhi, and the Rajmahal Hills.
