A former town in Sarashina County in the Chikuma River basin in northern Nagano Prefecture. The town center is a bustling hot spring town that has developed around Kamiyamada Onsen (simple sulfur spring, 40-60°C) and is connected to Togura Onsen. Apples and flowers are cultivated here, and the town is especially famous for carnations. In September 2003, it merged with Sarashina City and Togura Town, Hanishina County, to form Chikuma City. 長野県北部,千曲(ちくま)川流域の更級(さらしな)郡の旧町。中心市街は上山田(かみやまだ)温泉(単純硫黄泉,40〜60℃)を中心に戸倉温泉と地続きに発展した繁華な温泉町で,リンゴや花卉(かき)を栽培。特にカーネーションの産地として有名。2003年9月更埴市,埴科郡戸倉町と合併し,千曲市となる。15.62km2。6653人(2003)。
