Also known as the flower bean (illustration). A perennial plant native to Central America. In Japan, it is cultivated as an annual plant, and the young pods and beans are edible. It was introduced to Europe in the 17th century and was introduced to Japan at the end of the Edo period. The stem is vine-like and grows to about 4m, and the leaves are compound leaves consisting of three leaflets. The leaflets are pointed, oval, and 7-13cm long. A 15-20cm stalk grows from the base of the leaf, and many beautiful red flowers bloom. There is a variety with white flowers, called the white flowered bean var. albus Bailey. ハナササゲともいう(イラスト)。中央アメリカ原産の多年草。日本での栽培は一年草扱いとされ,若莢(わかざや)や豆を食用とする。17世紀にヨーロッパに伝わり,日本には江戸時代末期に渡来した。茎はつる状で,4mほどに伸び,葉は3枚の小葉からなる複葉である。小葉は先のとがった卵形で,長さ7~13cm。葉の付けねから15~20cmの柄が伸び,多数の紅色の美しい花が咲く。花が白色の品種があり,シロバナササゲvar.albus Baileyと呼ぶ。
