Fêtes galantes (France)

Japanese: フェート･ギャラント（英語表記）fêtes galantes[フランス]

The word means "an erotic banquet," but is used to refer to a specific genre of art, and is translated as "elegant banquet painting." This name was newly invented because Watteau's work "Pilgrimage to Cythera," which he submitted as a candidate for membership in the Academy, did not belong to any of the Academy's categories at the time. This name is given to works that depict scenes of people gathering outdoors to enjoy conversation, music, dance, etc. Many of Watteau's works belong to this genre, and they are half reflections of the customs of the Rococo period and half dreamy, theatrical scenes.

〈艶（えん）なる宴〉の意であるが，特定の美術ジャンルをさして使われる語で，〈雅宴画〉などと訳される。ワトーがアカデミー会員候補作品として提出した作品《シテール(キュテラ)島の巡礼》が，当時のアカデミーのどの部門にも属さなかったため，この名称が新たに案出された。野外に集い，会話，音楽，ダンスなどを楽しむ人々の情景を描く作品にあたえられる名称である。ワトーの作品の多くが，このジャンルに属し，それらは半ばはロココ時代の風俗を反映し，半ばは夢想的，演劇的な情景である。
