Italian philosopher. Born in Bomba, southern Italy. In 1840, he went to Naples to study German philosophy, and after living in Turin from 1850 to 1860, he became a professor of philosophy at the University of Naples in 1861, playing an active role as a central figure in neo-Hegelianism in Italy. His studies of Hegel during his Turin years, especially his major work "Phenomenology of Spirit," and 16th-century Italian philosophers, formed the basis of Spaventa's philosophy. He interprets that modern philosophy, which was born in Italy during the Renaissance, moved to Germany and reached its final development in idealism, especially Hegel, and then returned to 19th-century Italy. His works include "Italian Philosophy in Relation to European Philosophy" (completed in 1862, published in 1908).
