[The Rise and Fall of Epic Poetry]
During the Middle Ages High German period (11th to 14th centuries), the medieval political system of the Staufen dynasty was completed, and the knight class became the bearer of a new culture. The traditional German heroic legends were mixed with Christian culture, classical antiquity, Provencal court culture, Islamic court culture, and northern mythological culture to produce medieval German literature. The epic poems recited at court can be classified into three types based on the subject matter: (1) those centered on the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, such as Hartmann of Aue's Iwein and Wolfram of Eschenbach's Partifal; (2) those that deal with the legend of Tristan, such as Gottfried's Tristan and Isolde; and (3) those that originated from Germanic legends, such as the Nibelungenlied and the Coudrung. Each of these works shows a strong hybrid form. The Partifal, which has the most surviving manuscripts, is considered to be the most beloved work of its time.

From Hartmann

…During this period he wrote lyric poems about breaking with the world and love (Minne), and songs of crusades resulting from his participation in the Crusades (1189-91). “Iwein” was written between 1199 and 1205, but the first thousand of its 8,000 lines are thought to have been written before or after the writing of “Gregory.” “Iwein” and “Erec” are Arthurian tales, both adapted by Chrétien de Troyes, who first introduced them into Germany. …
