A mineral found in the oxidation zone of lead deposits. It is also called molybdenum ore. It may form a complex coexistence with other secondary lead minerals, or it may occur alone in quartz veins. Primary minerals of lead and molybdenum rarely coexist, at least in Japan. It is chemically continuous with stolzite (chemical formula Pb[WO 4 ]), which has the same structure. Its euhedral shape is a square plate, bipyramid, or complex square truncated shape. Its characteristics include a yellow-orange color, a resinous to adamantine luster, low hardness, and a large specific gravity. Its English name comes from Franz Xaver Wülfen (1728-1805), a monk and mineralogist in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. 同構造の鉛重石stolzite(化学式Pb[WO4])とは化学組成上連続する。
