A city in the Irkutsk region of southern Eastern Siberia, in central-eastern Russia. It is an industrial city located about 500 km north-northwest of the regional capital, Irkutsk, where the Oka River joins the Angara River. A fortress was built in 1631, and for a long time there was only a small settlement, but the population has increased rapidly since construction of the large Bratsk hydroelectric power station began in 1955. The power station was completed in 1964, with a maximum output of 4.5 million kW. Using this power, a large timber industrial complex and an aluminum factory were built. It has also formed an industrial complex with Ust-Ilimsk along the Angara River downstream from the city, and its influence on industry in central Eastern Siberia cannot be overlooked. It is connected to Irkutsk by water and air, and a branch line branches off from the Trans-Siberian Railway at Taishet in the west. Population: 246,348 (2010).
