Cotton rat

Japanese: コトンラット - ことんらっと（英語表記）cotton rat

A rodent mammal of the family Muridae, intermediate in size between a mouse and a rat. Also known as the cotton rat. It lives in grasslands and brush from the southern United States to Peru. It is 15-20 cm long, 8-14 cm long, and weighs 70-200 g. It is closely related to the Cricetidae (subfamily Scorpioninae), and has a short snout and legs, and is stocky. Its ears are short, and only half of them are exposed outside the fur. The hair on the upper surface of its body is stiff and black with light brown tips, making its back marbled and its underside grayish white. Its tail is shorter than its body and hairy.

マウスとラットの中間大の齧歯（げつし）目ネズミ科の哺乳類。アラゲコトンラットともいう。アメリカ南部からペルーまでの草原，やぶ地にすむ。体長15～20cm，尾長8～14cm，体重70～200g。キヌゲネズミに近縁(アメリカネズミ亜科)で，吻（ふん）と脚が短く，ずんぐりしている。耳介は短く，半分だけ毛衣外に露出する。体の上面の毛は硬く，黒色で先が淡褐色のため，背は霜降り状，体下面は灰白色。尾は体より短く，毛深い。
