A deciduous tall tree of the maple family (APG classification: Sapindaceae). It is also called Japanese maple or Takao maple. The leaves are opposite, the petiole is 2-4 cm long, the blade is 4-7 cm long and wide, palmately divided into 5-7 lobes, and the edges are roughly serrated. The winter buds have 4-5 pairs of scales. Monoecious. In April and May, 10-20 small flowers, each about 5 mm in diameter, bloom in a corymb-like panicle. There are 5 pale yellowish-white petals, 5 red sepals, and 8 stamens. The fruit has two wings and ripens in autumn. It is distributed in the temperate to subtropical zones of Honshu west of Fukushima Prefecture, Shikoku, Kyushu, southern Korea, and eastern China. This is the maple tree most commonly planted in gardens, and many cultivars have been created. The name comes from the game of counting the leaf lobes in alphabetical order. Takao maple is named after Takao, a famous maple spot in Kyoto. The autumn leaves are beautiful.
