Folk medicine - Minkanyaku

Japanese:
Folk medicine - Minkanyaku

This refers to drugs used in folk medicine. As folk medicines use animals, plants, and minerals found in the area, many of them are unique to each ethnic group and region. Therefore, investigating these drugs (comparative ethnopharmacology) is useful not only for developing new resources, but also for understanding historical and cultural relations between ethnic groups. Folk medicines are generally characterized by being used as a single ingredient (one type of drug), but some have been used in compound prescriptions since ancient times. In addition, drugs used in traditional medicine such as Chinese medicine can also be called folk medicines if they are used in folk medicine. Examples include ginseng and wolfberry, which are used as health remedies. There are many excellent folk medicines, and many of them, such as digitalis and belladonna, have contributed to modern medicine.
