An ocean current that flows eastward slightly north of the equator (between 3° and 10° north latitude) between the South Equatorial Current and the North Equatorial Current. In equatorial waters, the trade winds cause the sea level on the western side of the ocean to rise, creating a difference of 63 cm in the Pacific Ocean and 14 cm in the Atlantic Ocean. This water surface gradient is said to be the driving force behind the equatorial doldrums. There is also a view that the equatorial countercurrent exists south of the equator.
