A marine fish of the family Doradoidae in the order Perciformes (illustration). Also known as manbiki. Its English name is dorado, which comes from the Spanish word for gold, because its body color when alive is shining gold dotted with small cobalt spots. However, the color fades quickly when it is caught. In various parts of Japan, it is called tohyaku, toyaku, manbiki, or kumabiki, which means "100,000,000 fish," or "90,000 fish," and is said to be derived from the fact that it can be caught continuously when it encounters a school of them. It has a rather long, band-like body and can reach a total length of 1.8 m. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
