Fernand Crommelynck

Belgian playwright. Born in Brussels, he worked as an actor and a newspaper journalist before gaining recognition in 1906 with his debut work, "I Will Not Go to the Woods." He soon achieved worldwide fame with his work, "The Magnificent Cocytus" (1920), staged by Lugne Pau at the Théâtre d'États-États in Paris, which became a huge hit, and in 1922, Meyerhold directed it in Moscow. He took the traditional plot of a cheated husband to the extreme, in which a husband suspects his wife's behavior and forces her to sleep with every man in town to get evidence. The protagonist's madness and self-deprecation are comical and cruel at the same time, and the torrent of dialogue still feels fresh today.

ベルギーの劇作家。ブリュッセルに生まれ，俳優，新聞記者を経て，1906年に処女作《森には行くまい》で認められた。やがてリュニェ･ポーがパリの制作座で上演した《堂々たるコキュ》(1920)が大当りとなり，22年にはモスクワでメイエルホリドが演出するなど，世界的名声を得た。伝統的なだまされ亭主の筋書を極端に推しすすめ，妻の素行を疑った夫がその証拠を握るために町中の男と寝ることを強制する。この主人公の狂気と自虐はこっけいであると同時に残酷で，奔流のようなせりふと共に今日なお新鮮さを失わない。
