An evergreen tall tree of the Apocynaceae family that grows wild on each island of the Ogasawara Islands. It grows to a height of several meters, sometimes exceeding 10 meters. The trunk is light gray-white and stands upright, with yellow bark on the inside. It is said that the name "Yarodo" was derived from the Western islanders' name for this wood, which was corrupted to "yellow wood." The leaves are thick and glossy, 10-15 cm long, rounded at the tip, and characterized by dense rows of lateral veins that branch out at almost right angles to the midrib. When damaged, both the leaves and branches secrete a white juice that is poisonous. In summer, panicles are formed at the ends of the branches, and many small, yellow-white, star-shaped, gamopetalous flowers grow. The fruit consists of two ellipsoidal caryopsis that face each other and turn bright yellow when ripe.
