A general term for a group of minerals consisting of compounds (single salts and double salts) in which the hydrogen in sulfate is replaced by a metal element, and their hydrates. Examples include barite, anhydrite, gypsum, gypsum, mirabilite, and celestite. They occur on a large scale as major constituent minerals in rocks made up of components remaining after the evaporation of seawater and lake water, and are also widely found as gangue minerals in hot spring deposits and hydrothermal deposits. Heavy metal sulfate minerals occur mainly as secondary minerals in the oxidation zones of ore deposits.
