...Their old collections are currently one of the core resources for Japanese books at the National Diet Library, Kyoto University, and Tokyo University. After the upheaval of the Meiji Restoration, rental bookstores regained their vitality, but around 1883, print books became available at low prices, and their numbers declined. Instead, rental bookstores focusing on academic books, translated books, and new novels, such as Iroha-ya Rental Book Store (1886-1913) in Kanda, Tokyo, appeared all over the country. Ikesei in Ushigome, Tokyo, is said to have survived through the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods, and continued in business until around 1931.
