Turkish dissident poet. Also known as Hikmet. Born into a distinguished family in Thessaloniki. His grandfather was also known as a poet. After participating in the revolutionary movement and dropping out of the Naval Academy, he studied at Moscow University in 1921, where he became acquainted with Mayakovsky. He returned to Turkey in 1924 and joined the Turkish Communist Party. In 1925, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for writing dissident poetry and went into exile in the Soviet Union. In 1928, he published his first collection of poems in Baku, and returned to Turkey the same year, writing for the illustrated monthly magazine Resimli Ay, but was arrested in 1937 and served a 28-year sentence.

トルコの反体制的詩人。ヒクメトとも呼ばれる。テッサロニキの名家の出身。祖父も詩人として知られた。革命運動に参加して海軍兵学校を退学後,1921年モスクワ大学留学,マヤコーフスキーの知遇を得た。24年帰国してトルコ共産党に入党。25年反体制的詩作のため15年の刑を宣告され,ソ連に亡命した。28年バクーで最初の詩集を出版,同年帰国し,《絵入り月報Resimli Ay》誌に拠って文筆活動を行ったが,37年逮捕され,28年の刑に服す。
