Mathematician. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Tokyo Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo). Served as professor at the University of Tokyo and Gakushuin University. Became a member of the Japan Academy in 1978. An authority on number theory, he rebuilt the systems for mathematics research and education at the Mathematical Society of Japan and the Science Council of Japan, while also participating in peace movements such as anti-Vietnam War and nuclear abolition.
