Masayoshi Yanaga

Japanese: 弥永昌吉 - いやながしょうきち

Mathematician. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Tokyo Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo). Served as professor at the University of Tokyo and Gakushuin University. Became a member of the Japan Academy in 1978. An authority on number theory, he rebuilt the systems for mathematics research and education at the Mathematical Society of Japan and the Science Council of Japan, while also participating in peace movements such as anti-Vietnam War and nuclear abolition. His younger brother was the Japanese ancient history scholar Yanagi Teizo, and his brother-in-law was the mathematician Kodaira Kunihiko.

数学者。東京都出身。東京帝国大学（現，東京大学）理学部数学科卒業。東京大学教授，学習院大学教授を務めた。1978年に日本学士院会員となる。整数論などの権威で，日本数学会や日本学術会議で数学研究・数学教育の体制を再建した一方，ベトナム反戦や核兵器廃絶などの平和運動にも参加した。日本古代史学者の弥永貞三(ていぞう)は弟，数学者の小平邦彦は義弟である。
