Born: February 19, 1882, Nihonbashi, Tokyo [Died] December 9, 1927. Tokyo sculptor. Real name Kamekichi. Maiden name Shimura, later changed surname to Tobari family, his mother's family home. In 1901, he went to the United States to study Western painting, and studied drawing, oil painting, and illustration at the National Academy of Fine Arts, where he met Ogiwara Morie and became interested in sculpture. In 1906, he returned to Japan due to tuberculosis. He worked to popularize Western-style illustrations, and illustrated Tokutomi Roka's collection of essays, Nature and Life. In 1910, he joined the sculpture department of the Taiheiyo Gakai Institute, and exhibited Onago at the 4th Bunten Exhibition in the same year. He continued to exhibit at Bunten exhibitions after that, but in 1916, he transferred to the sculpture department of the Reorganized Japan Art Academy (→ Japan Art Academy), and became a member in 1917. He was active as a representative artist of the Inten exhibition, along with Nakahara Teijiro and others. His flowing flesh that intelligently incorporates light and shadow was highly praised. In 1918, he participated in the founding of the Japan Creative Print Association with Yamamoto Kanae and Oda Kazuma, and was active in a wide range of fields. His major works include "Footwork" (1914, Tokyo National Museum), "Nothingness" (1920, Mie Prefectural Art Museum), "Sparkling Jealousy" (1924, Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art), and the print "Riding a Ball" (1914).
