A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family that grows on the Pacific coast from the Kanto region northward. It is often cultivated for its beautiful flowers. The stem is thick, reaches a height of 1m, and the lower part becomes shrub-like. The leaves are sessile, spoon-shaped, 3-10cm long, fleshy and glossy, and almost hairless. In autumn, it produces a white flower head at the top. The flower head is 5-6cm in diameter, with white ray florets about 3cm long on the periphery and yellow tubular flowers in the center. The involucre is ovate, finely hairy, and about 1cm long. The achene is about 4mm long and has short pappus. The Shasta daisy, a horticultural variety, was created using this species as a single parent.
