Mulla (English spelling)

Japanese: ムッラー（英語表記）mullā

A Persian corruption of the Arabic mawlā (meaning "master" or "ally"; singular form of mawāli). In Persian, the word is used in a variety of ways. (1) Originally, it was used as an honorific for someone with a deep knowledge of Islamic religious studies. The word mullah given to Mulla Hadi Sabzawari has this meaning. (2) A person who teaches children how to read, write, and the Quran at khuttabs (temple schools) throughout Iran is called a mullah. People called mullahs are those who have completed a certain level of religious education at madrasahs (schools) in Qom, Mashhad, and other places.

アラビア語のマウラーmawlā(〈主人〉〈味方〉等の意，マワーリーの単数形)がペルシア語に転訛した語。ペルシア語においてこの語は多義的に用いられる。(1)本来，イスラムの宗教諸学に深く通じた人に対する尊称として用いられる。ムッラー･ハーディー･サブザワーリーに冠せられるムッラーの語はこの意味である。(2)イラン各地のクッターブ(寺子屋)で児童に読み書きやコーランを教える人をムッラーと呼ぶ。ムッラーと呼ばれる人々は，コム，マシュハドなどにある学院(マドラサ)で一定の宗教教育を修了した人々である。
