The impression of motion that appears when you turn your eyes to a stationary object immediately after observing a moving object for a while. This phenomenon occurs when you gaze at a moving object for a while and then turn your eyes to a stationary object. The stationary object appears to move in the opposite direction to the direction of the movement you were looking at just before. This phenomenon also occurs when you gaze at the flow of water in a waterfall and then look at the surrounding scenery, so it is also called the waterfall illusion.
