Al-Azhar University

Al-Azhar University

Located in Cairo, Egypt, it is one of the oldest universities in the world. It was founded in 970. Its official name is Al-Azhar University. It originally originated as a Shiite mosque, and even today it reigns as a central presence in the Arab world in Islamic studies. In the 18th and 19th centuries, when it was under British and French rule, the university was modernized, and in 1936 it was reorganized into three faculties: law, theology, and Arabic linguistics. In 1961, it was incorporated into one of the national universities by the "Al-Azhar University Reorganization Law." As of 1999, it has become a large-scale comprehensive university with eight faculties (Islamic Theology, Islamic Law, Arabic Studies, Engineering, Medicine, Commerce, Agriculture, and Science), as well as the Advanced Institute of Language and Translation, the Arabic and Islamic Advanced Institute, and the Islamic Women's College. It has about 6,000 faculty members and 155,000 students. All Egyptian universities are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Higher Education, which was established in 1961, but the Islamic Law and Theology faculties of this university have their own autonomy. Even after being reorganized into a modern university, the university's goal is to inherit, develop and disseminate Islamic heritage and to revive the Arab world. There are many international students from Islamic countries.
