The national anthem of France. The lyrics and music (1792) were written by Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836), a capable officer in the Strasbourg corps of the revolutionary army. In April 1792, war was declared against Austria, and in July of that year, volunteer soldiers from Marseilles sang this song as they entered Paris, causing the song to suddenly spread throughout the country, hence the name. In 1795, it was adopted as the national anthem. The lyrics have seven verses, including one for children. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
