A river in central-western France. A tributary of the Loire. It is about 370 km long. It originates on the Mirebache plateau in the western Massif Central. It passes near Limoges, crosses the Limousin hills and flows west, then turns at a right angle and flows north to join the lower Loire near Saumur. In the lower reaches is Châtellerault, which is developing as an industrial city. There are many dams in the middle and upper reaches, and hydroelectric power generation is the most prosperous in the Loire River system.
