Vienne River (English spelling)

Japanese: ビエンヌ[川]（英語表記）Vienne

A river in central-western France. A tributary of the Loire. It is about 370 km long. It originates on the Mirebache plateau in the western Massif Central. It passes near Limoges, crosses the Limousin hills and flows west, then turns at a right angle and flows north to join the lower Loire near Saumur. In the lower reaches is Châtellerault, which is developing as an industrial city. There are many dams in the middle and upper reaches, and hydroelectric power generation is the most prosperous in the Loire River system. [Ono Yugo]

フランス中西部の川。ロアール川の支流。全長約370km。マシフ･サントラル西部のミルバッシュ高原に源を発する。リモージュ近郊を通り，リムーザン丘陵を横切って西流したのち，直角に向きをかえ北流してソミュール付近でロアール川下流に合流する。下流部には工業都市として発展しつつあるシャテルローがある。中･上流部にはダムが多く，ロアール川水系の中では水力発電が最も盛んである。【小野有五】
