Coppélia - Coppélia (English spelling)

Coppélia - Coppélia (English spelling)

Ballet. 3 acts, 4 scenes. Music by Delibes. The libretto was adapted by Charles Nuyttel from The Sandman by E. T. A. Hoffmann, and later revised by Arthur Saint-Léon. Choreography by Saint-Léon. It premiered at the Paris Opera in May 1870. An old toymaker, Dr. Coppelius, is making a doll of a beautiful girl. A young boy, Franz, peeks into the house opposite and mistakenly believes the doll to be alive, so he breaks into Coppelius' house, but is found and captured by the doctor. Franz's lover, Swanilda, disguises herself as the doll and saves Franz. This work avoids the fantastical ending of the original Sandman, in which the boy commits suicide, and is sprinkled with folk dances in the opening and closing acts, making it a fun piece. There are many revised versions, including that of the New York City Ballet, but Roland Petit's revised version, which places the stylish Dr. Coppélius in the lead role, is a novel one. The original "The Sandman" was also featured in Offenbach's opera "The Tales of Hoffmann."
