The Great Mosque was built in Al-Qatay, southeast of Cairo, Egypt, in 876 by Ibn Tulun, a Turkish ruler of the Tulunid dynasty. The mosque itself is 116m wide and 140m deep, with an outer courtyard on three sides except the qibla side, and is surrounded by an outer wall. Its colonnaded design, outer courtyard, brick construction, and spiral minaret all closely resemble the architectural style of Samarra in Iraq.
