This is a representative seaweed of the brown algae family Dictyostelidaceae, so named because of the fine mesh pattern on its body (illustration). The body is yellowish brown and band-like, and branches out almost regularly into a fork shape, reaching a height of 7 to 15 cm and a width of 0.5 to 1.0 cm. At the tip of the body is a large apical cell that divides and grows vigorously. Reproduction occurs from late spring to summer, producing spotted patterns of oophores, antheridia, or tetrasporangia that can be seen with the naked eye on the body surface. Eggs are laid approximately 1 to 2 days before the new moon and full moon, and the fertilized eggs germinate into diploid (2 n ) sporophytes.
