Louisiana is a state located in the central United States, on the prairies. Abbreviations: Neb., NE. The Missouri River runs south along the state's eastern border, and the terrain slopes gently from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in the west to the east. It is a typical agricultural state, with the corn belt in the east, wheat in the southwest, and cattle and sheep grazing in the northwest. Its main industry is agricultural and livestock processing, centered in Omaha. It produces oil. Purchased from France by the United States in 1803 (Louisiana Purchase), colonized in 1847, and joined the Union in 1867.
