Tea Act

The law passed by the British House of Commons on April 27, 1773. In order to save the British East India Company, which was on the verge of bankruptcy due to a backlog of tea amounting to 17 million pounds, it exempted tea exports to the North American colonies from tax and granted the company's agents in the colonies a monopoly on selling tea. The Tea Act caused strong resentment among the colonists because it threatened tea merchants in the colonies by giving a monopoly on sales to a single company at the sole discretion of Parliament, and it led to the Boston Tea Party on December 16 of the same year, which became the catalyst for American independence.

1773年4月 27日イギリス下院 (庶民院) を通過した法律。 1700万ポンドに上る茶の滞貨に苦しみ，破産寸前の状態にあったイギリス東インド会社を救うため，北アメリカ植民地に輸出される茶への税を免除し，植民地における同社の代理店に茶の独占販売権を認めたもの。この茶税法は，本国議会の一存で独占販売権を一会社に与えて植民地の茶商人を脅かした点で強い反感を植民地人の間に広げ，同年 12月 16日ボストン茶会事件を引起し，アメリカ独立への契機となった。
