...He served as professor of botany at Uppsala University from 1742 onwards, but after his death in a secluded area on the outskirts of Uppsala, the university position was passed on to his son, and then to his disciple Thunberg, who succeeded him as professor at Uppsala University and later as rector, and popularised Linnaeus' ideas. In 1788, J. E. Smith (1759-1828) founded the Linnean Society in London in memory of Linnaeus, and became its first president. Smith personally purchased Linnaeus' specimens and books, and after his death the society purchased them, and a herbarium and library were built to preserve them. ...
