1596‐1645 The first Tsar of the Romanov dynasty of Russia. Reigned from 1613 to 1645. Elected by the Zemsky Sobor (national assembly) at the end of the Time of Troubles (Smuta), he first tried to restore order in the country with its help. With Sweden, which had occupied northwestern Russia and Novgorod and was approaching Pskov, he concluded the Stolbova peace treaty in 1617, and with Poland, which was attacking the outskirts of Moscow, he concluded the Deulino truce the following year. At the same time, he began to rebuild the domestic government by imposing heavy taxes and strengthening serfdom, and promoted the development of Siberia.
