The process in which ATP is formed from ADP and inorganic phosphate in conjunction with the electron transfer reaction from respiratory substrates to molecular oxygen. Through this reaction, part of the energy released with the oxidation of sugars and fatty acids is captured in the form of high-energy phosphate bonds in ATP, i.e., the form most easily usable by living organisms (high-energy bonds). More than 90% of the ATP produced with the complete oxidation of one glucose molecule is obtained by oxidative phosphorylation, and this process is extremely important in the energy metabolism of living organisms.

呼吸基質から分子状酸素への電子伝達反応と共役して，ADPと無機リン酸からATPが形成される過程。この反応によって，糖や脂肪酸の酸化に伴って解放されるエネルギーの一部が，ATPの高エネルギーリン酸結合の形，すなわち生物にとって最も利用しやすい形で捕捉される(高エネルギー結合)。ブドウ糖1分子の完全酸化に伴って生成するATPの90％以上は酸化的リン酸化によって得られるものであり，この過程は生物のエネルギー代謝においてきわめて重要である。
