Born: 26 February 1803, Soest Died: February 3, 1861. Göttingen. German physiologist. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Göttingen in 1823, he studied comparative anatomy and zoology in Paris, and became a lecturer (1825) and professor (35) at the University of Göttingen. He showed that when the testes were removed from male chickens, secondary sexual characteristics did not appear, and that when testes were transplanted into such chickens, secondary sexual characteristics were produced (49), proving that the presence of the testes causes secondary sexual characteristics. This was a pioneering experiment proving the existence of an endocrine system for biological regulation.
