Ivanovo (English spelling)
Ivanovo-Voznesensk until 1932. Capital of Ivanovo Oblast in western Russia. An industrial city located on the Uvozh River, a tributary of the Volga River, about 250 km northeast of Moscow. Known for handicrafts, mainly spinning, since the late 18th century, it developed after being connected to Moscow by rail in 1868. In 1871, the villages of Ivanovo and Voznesensk merged to form a city. As the center of Russia's major textile industry, it produced cotton, woolen, and flax textiles, and was called the Manchester of Russia. In 1905, the famous "Ivanovo-Voznesensk strike" occurred, and the first Russian Soviet was established, albeit for a short period of time. Today, it remains one of Russia's leading textile cities, producing cotton, wool, silk, and clothing, as well as machinery (textile machinery, peat mining machines, cranes), food (meat, oils, and seafood processing), leather, and shoe-making industries. There are universities of textiles, medicine, agriculture, and education, as well as a local museum, art gallery, and a symphony orchestra, among other educational and cultural facilities. It is a junction for railways and highways. Population: 409,277 (2010).
