Stencil dyeing - Katazome

Japanese: 型染 - かたぞめ

A dyeing method that uses a stencil to dye a pattern. It is also called katatsukezome, and especially when it is a craft with a pictorial pattern, it is called kataezome. It is applied to fabrics, washi paper, and leather. The general method is to apply a stencil to the fabric, place a dye-resistant paste or colored paste, and then dye it in one color or multiple colors by applying color or rubbing. Representative examples include chugata, bingata, komon, and katazome yuzen.

型を用いて模様を染める染色法。型付染ともいい，特に絵画的な模様をもつ工芸的なものを型絵染とも称する。布地のほか和紙，皮革にも応用される。一般的な方法は型紙を当て防染糊(のり)や色糊をおいて模様をつけ，色差しやすり込みなどにより単色あるいは多色に染める。代表的なものに中形，紅型(びんがた)，小紋，型染友禅など。
