In 1919, he formed the eight-piece band Oito Batutas, one of the most famous in the history of Brazilian popular music, and in 1922 he moved to Paris. He was known as a master of the flute, an instrument closely related to choro, but in the mid-1940s, he switched to the tenor saxophone because his fingers began to tremble, and he was also known as a master of the instrument. …
