Katata

Japanese: 堅田 - かたた
Katata

A district of Otsu City in southern Shiga Prefecture. Formerly Katata Town. Located on the western shore of Lake Biwa at its narrowest point. Since ancient times, it has flourished as a key point on the Western Omi Road and for lake transportation, and the Katata Navy was active here during the Sengoku period. It is also a fishing port where fish such as Katata crucian carp are caught. There is a floating shrine in the middle of the lake, and Katata's Rakugan was one of the Eight Views of Omi. Currently, the area is seeing a marked increase in factories and residential development. National Route 161 passes through the area, and JR Kosei Line Katata Station is located here. It is also at the western end of Lake Biwa Bridge, which connects to National Route 477.
