Markovnikov's rule

This is an empirical rule regarding the direction of addition when an electrophilic reagent of HX type, such as hydrogen halide, sulfuric acid, or water, is added to an unsymmetric alkene such as propylene ( _CH3CH =CH2 ₎ . This general rule dictates that the main product is an adduct in which H is bonded to the carbon with more hydrogen atoms bonded to it, and X is bonded to the carbon with more alkyl substitutions, and was discovered in 1869 by the Russian organic chemist Vladimir Vasil'evich Markovnikov (1838-1904).

プロピレンCH₃CH＝CH₂のような非対称アルケンにハロゲン化水素，硫酸，水などHX型の求電子試薬が付加する際の，付加の方向に関する経験則。二つのアルケン炭素のうち，水素原子とより多く結合したほうの炭素にHが結合し，アルキル置換の多いほうの炭素にXが結合した付加物が主生成物となるという通則で，1869年にロシアの有機化学者マルコフニコフVladimir Vasil’evich Markovnikov(1838‐1904)により見いだされた。
