Katashinagawa

A river that flows through the northeastern part of Gunma Prefecture. A tributary of the Tonegawa River. It originates south of Oze Marsh and west of Kinunuma Mountain, flows south, joins the Neri River and the Akagi River at the northern foot of Akagi Mountain, and joins the Tone River at the southern end of the Numata Basin. It is 60.8 km long. The river basin is intermittently covered with beautiful terraces, which are often used for farming. There is a bus service along this coast from Numata Station to Oze. In the area of ​​Okai, Tone Town, Numata City, you can see the Fukiware Gorge, a nationally designated natural monument and scenic spot, as well as the magnificent Fukiware Falls and potholes, and downstream is Oigami Onsen. The main river and its tributaries are also part of the power generation area, with 14 hydroelectric power plants generating 140,000 kilowatts of electricity, and many people visit the Sonohara Dam and Lake Sonohara in the middle reaches of the river. The area along the Katashina River is also called Tone Higashiiri.

群馬県北東部を流れる川。利根川(とねがわ)の支流。源を尾瀬(おぜ)沼南方および鬼怒沼(きぬぬま)山西方に発して南流し、赤城(あかぎ)山北麓(ほくろく)で根利(ねり)川、赤城川をあわせ、沼田盆地(ぬまたぼんち)の南端で利根川に合流する。延長60.8キロメートル。流域にはみごとな段丘が断続的に発達し、農耕地としてよく利用されている。沼田駅から尾瀬へはこの沿岸にバスが通じる。沼田市利根町追貝(おっかい)の地域には国指定天然記念物・名勝の吹割渓(ふきわれけい)ならびに吹割瀑と甌穴(おうけつ)群の絶景がみられ、その下流に老神温泉(おいがみおんせん)がある。また、本・支流は電源地帯の一つで、14か所の水力発電所で14万キロワットを発電し、中流の薗原(そのはら)ダムと薗原湖を訪れる人も多い。片品川沿いの地域は利根東入(ひがしい)りともいう。
