In the Meiji Civil Code, retirement was defined as the act of renouncing family rights in favor of an heir to the family head during one's lifetime, and it was stipulated that the head of the family must usually be over 60 years old (although any age is acceptable for a female head of the family) and that the heir to the family head must be approved in advance. However, the retirement practice that was practiced throughout Japan was a system in which a family splits into several relatively independent living units (households). Since retirement splits a family into several households, it is also called the retirement multiple household system, and a family that adopts this retirement multiple household system is called a retirement system family. The retirement system family was one typical type of Japanese family, along with the single-household family, which does not particularly separate living units within the family.
