Yukie Ikegami

Japanese: 池上雪枝 - いけがみゆきえ

1826-1891 A social worker from the late Edo to Meiji period.
Born February 1, 1826. Grandmother of Murakami Kagaku. She married in 1852 and supported herself by fortune-telling. She also spread the teachings of Shinto, and in 1883, established a Shinto prayer center in Osaka. She also established the Ikegami Reformatory in her own home, where she protected and guided delinquent boys. The institution is said to be the first reformatory in Japan. She died May 2, 1891. She was 66 years old. She was from Osaka. Her maiden name was Okubo.

1826－1891　幕末-明治時代の社会事業家。
文政9年2月1日生まれ。村上華岳の祖母。嘉永(かえい)5年結婚し,易断で生活をささえた。また神道の布教をおこない,明治16年大阪に神道祈祷(きとう)所をもうける。一方,自宅に池上感化院を設立し,非行少年を保護,善導。同院は日本最初の感化院とされる。明治24年5月2日死去。66歳。大坂出身。旧姓は大久保。
