A village in Kuma District, southern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 3,025 (1995). The southeastern part is mountainous and part of the Kunimi Mountains, but the northwestern part is flat and forms part of the Hitoyoshi Basin. Blessed with irrigation water from the Hyakutaro Canal and Konobuchou Canal, which draw water from the Kuma River, the area is one of the leading rice paddy areas in the Hitoyoshi Basin. Rice is the main crop, but other industries include tobacco and rush cultivation, greenhouse horticulture for melons and watermelons, and livestock farming. There is the Okahara Kannon Hall, which retains the architectural style of the Muromachi period. [Matsuhashi Koji] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
