Cassou, J.

...Representative illegal magazines were Jacques Decour (1910-1942), the official journal of the National Committee of Writers, and Lettres Française, which was founded by Paulhan in September 1942. Others included Poésie 40 (renamed 41, 42, etc. over the years) and L'Éternel Ruby, centered around Éluard. However, the roles played by Fontaine, published in Algiers, and the Cahiers du Rhône, the first magazine to be published in Switzerland by A. Beguin, which numbered 50 titles, should not be overlooked. In addition, the Midnight Series, which began in August 1942 with the publication of Vercors's (1902-91) The Silence of the Sea, was published by Vercors, Pierre de Lescure (1891-1963) and Paulhan, and released 44 anonymous volumes by Aragon, F. Mauriac, Elsa Triolet (1896-1970), Jean Cassou (1897-1986), Banda, Guénau and Gide. These works, which both authors and publishers sacrificed their personal safety to print, all appeal for resistance to German oppression and the defense of universal human values, transcending their respective political and ideological positions, and convey the traditional French spirit since the Revolution, making a moving statement.
